HOLIDAY FEVER

With the holidays almost upon us, here are a few thoughts:

  • Please consider a donation to a charity as a gift, or part of a gift, this season. There are many organisations which rely entirely on your goodwill to survive. The BWC banking details are Standard Bank branch 025109 Savings Acc 077 491 645
  • Please ensure your companion animals are cared for by a trusted relative or friend if they have to stay at home while you holiday, this season.
  • Do not give animals as gifts They can be an unwelcome, expensive surprise and adopting an animal must always be a carefully considered exercise by those wanting a companion.
  • Please support your local shelter / adoption agency instead of breeders, when looking for a companion. There are millions of animals needing a loving home, right now.
  • Please do not support New Year fireworks! The trauma to animals, the damage to the environment and the health implications for asthma sufferers is immense!
  • Order your Christmas cards from Beauty Without Cruelty – order at toni@bwcsa.co.za

For those who may not receive our December newsletter in time, may we take this opportunity to wish you and yours a peaceful, caring and safe festive season, however you may spend it, and a year ahead filled with compassion and care for all who live on earth and peace and joy to you and yours.

LIVING THE ‘BEAUTY WITHOUT CRUELTY’ ETHIC

We are often asked how we can be supported. Naturally, ongoing funding is always required, however, see these options:

  • Support (attend) local protests and demonstrations, which are always legal and peaceful. Your presence IS required to make a difference in creating awareness around issues such as fur, seal slaughter, Foie Gras, wildlife exploitation and more.
  • Use, as far as is possible, BWC endorsed products.
  • Support animal free circuses and events. Tell your friends and family why.
  • Ask a teacher to invite BWC to do a presentation, which will include our short informative ‘Living Without Cruelty’ film
  • Become vegetarian and better yet, vegan. See our Why Vegan  and Why Not Free Range? pages
  • Encourage vegetarian / vegan options at the school / varsity café
  • Encourage your children to purse animal related school projects (animal friendly, that is)
  • Shop with conscience; choose faux leather bags, belts, shoes and sandals. Avoid bone, coral, feathers and shell or any animal product in decorating the home or accessorising.
  • When giving a BWC approved product as a gift, include a copy of our Approved list, to be found in the right hand column of this newsletter.
  • Recycle. Recycling is kinder to the planet and will help halt the destruction of animal habitats, amongst other things.
  • Invite friends or family around for an animal-product free meal and a film viewing. (Family films like Babe, Charlotte’s Web, Free Willy and others all raise ethical questions that require thought, over and above the obvious to include the use of these same animals in entertainment. These days of fantastic computer generated animation means there is no need to use animals.) Discuss animal exploitation and what can be done by everyone, immediately, to stop the exploitation. Do not think of what is being ‘given up’ or sacrificed, but rather, what potential you are opening yourself up to.

RECYCLING

What does recycling have to do with Beauty Without Cruelty? Everything really. Recycling is part of living with conscience.

By recycling, we contribute to the elimination of deforestation, mining and many other primary extraction practices that are destroying much of the planet’s resources and animal habitat.

Clearer Conscience is a Cape Town based business that has grown out of a need to do something today to help the planet. right now. Being localised has allowed them to develop an easily accessible way to recycle waste at very affordable prices.

After years of shlepping a car load of bags and boxes to a recycling plant I am delighted that I have recently handed over this task to CC. I encourage all our readers to support them, and in doing so, support the planet. Visit www.clearer.co.za for more information.

CHARLOTTE RHYS SPA RANGE LAUNCHED with BWC endorsement.

Janet Rhys, Toni Brockhoven and Shaun McDemott

The recent attendance of the launch of the new Charlotte Rhys Spa range was a delight in many ways. Their use of local and sustainable ingredients such as baobab and aloe and refusal to include petrochemical byproducts makes for a luxurious yet affordable, elegant and cruelty free product that is a pleasure to use.

Janet Rhys and Shaun McDermott founded Charlotte Rhys and can be proud that today Charlotte Rhys is a respected brand and an aspirational icon in the South African market place. All Charlotte Rhys products are produced under the watchful eyes of Janet and Shaun in their own factory in Cape Town. Charlotte Rhys proudly supplies some of the leading hotels, lodges, resorts and spas in the world and can be found locally. Visit their website www.charlotterhys.com for a list of products and suppliers. (Note their skin care range is BWC approved, not their leather products!)

INTERNATIONAL ANIMAL RIGHTS DAY DEMO IN CAPE TOWN

WHERE: V&A entrance, N1 side             TIME 11am to 1pm

Join us for the last demonstration of the year outside the V&A Waterfront entrance at 11am Saturday 12th December and have your say against animal exploitation and abuse, be it fur, seal slaughter, foie gras, zoos, circuses, performing animals, vivisection, ivory, canned hunting, performing animals (adverts, films etc)

Bring Granny (and a chair) and the kids and make this a family experience. Wear animal ears and tails, ‘message’ tee shirts and make large, easy to hold, posters with as few words as possible, to make it easy for passers by to read. Some pickets will be provided.

Dress up as a ringmaster and animal slave, find a cage and be a zoo lion or lab primate. Daub yourself in fake blood. Wear dog ears and dog collar and try and pull away from your ‘owner’. Hopefully our ‘lab animal’ with large syringe will also join us…

Dress up, but most importantly, show up! RSVP to toni@bwcsa.co.za soonest please, as we have to give an indication of numbers.

FESTIVE RECIPES

A delicious and different centerpiece best enjoyed with gravy, followed by easy and delicious Christmas ice cream.  The recipes do not have to be limited to this time of year and would do well for any dinner party.

SEAL PUPS

Please do NOT approach stranded  seal pups you may find. Humans mean well, but touching them, even to stroke, and getting too close causes immense stress, which can and does kill the pups. Please call the following numbers to report stranded seal pups:

TYGERBERG ZOO

The zoo has declined the offer of sanctuary for Angus and Mac where they could live out their lives in a near natural state. The relocation of them would have been filmed for Animal Planet, promoting Tygerberg zoo in a positive light resulting in much needed funding for them. BWC has offered, on more than one occasion, to cover the relocation costs.

‘BAD MEDICINE’

Capetonians will soon see this excellent film on the human cost of animal expeorimets on Cape Town Television soon, by special arrangement. You will be messaged via Facebook with screening times.

--------------------------------------------

RAFFLE

Please remember to take an on-line raffle ticket for just R30, to win a fantastic  dinner bed and breakfast experience, surrounded by rescued lions at the Drakenstein Lion Park, plus other goodies! We need your support! The more tickets you take the more chance you stand to win.

August 2009 Approved List

We have strict criteria that includes the holding companies, subsidiaries and suppliers.

Humane Criteria

QUOTE OF THE MONTH

If we cut up beasts simply because they cannot prevent us and because we are backing our own side in the struggle for existence, it is only logical to cut up imbeciles, criminals, enemies, or capitalists for the same reasons.  ~C.S. Lewis

WE CAN'T TELL YOU

Beauty Without Cruelty hosted a successful follow up meeting with interested parties surrounding the annual seal pup strandings. For assorted reasons, we may not divulge details, suffice to say the outcome was positive and there would appear to be a concerted effort by various groups and individuals to work together toward a common goal.
