Every year approximately 40 million animals are killed worldwide for their fur. About two thirds of these are reared on fur farms and the rest are trapped in the wild, but over and above these numbers, millions more non-target animals die in traps and are discarded by the trapper because they are useless. These animals, which often include domestic cats and dogs, are referred to in the trade as "trash". 30 million animals are killed on fur farms annually worldwide and some people think that because they are reared on farms it means that they don’t suffer. This is very far from the truth and plenty of video footage exists to verify the suffering inflicted on these animals.

Roughly 10 million animals are trapped for their fur every year worldwide.

Species include beaver, mink, muskrat, fox, raccoon, badger and squirrel.

Leghold traps consist of a steel base upon which are set two steel jaws. A strong metal spring is fixed to the base and runs up the jaws. When the trap is set the jaws are opened to their fullest extent and secured by a metal clip. This is released when the animal steps on the base of the plate, causing the jaws to slam shut with incredible force.

Trapped animals have been known to gnaw off their own limbs to escape from the trap (trappers call this "wring off"). They wait in pain and terror for hours, even days, before the trapper checks his traps. To protect the fur, trapped animals are killed by bludgeoning on the head or suffocation, where the trapper tramples on the animals vital organs.

Muskrat and mink caught in under water traps can struggle for between 2-5 minutes and take approximately 9 minutes to drown; beavers may take as long as 20 minutes.

How to Help

  • Don't buy fur garments.
  • Don't buy angora rabbit wool garments.
  • Don't buy fur trim, toys or accessories.
  • "Fake" is not necessary faux, but can be fur from dogs and cats killed in the East, so be careful what you buy.
  • Leather is just fur without the hair - don't wear leather !
  • Write to the Minister of Environmental affairs and demand a ban on trapping.
  • Write letters to fashion designers who use fur asking them to STOP.
  • Speak to advertisers and magazines that promote the fur trade, asking them to STOP.
  • Ask Beauty Without Cruelty to give an educational talk on the fur trade and other areas of animal abuse.
  • Sign the fur pledge and ask others to do so as well.

It is hard to fathom that anyone is still wearing fur. It is so plain to see that killing animals for their fur is completely barbaric. The only purpose is vanity.
