In recent times, Southern Africa has seen a huge upsurge in people involved in the animal rights movement, all
calling for animals to be recognized as sentient beings. At the moment, most constitutions recognize animals
as inanimate objects, incapable of feeling pain, terror or having any kind of consciousness.

On the 14th March, animal rights activists from Beauty without Cruelty and joined by members of Seal Alert, Animal Rights Africa, the Vegan Society, Ban Foie Gras and Uncaged in Cape Town and Pretoria came together to protest the killing of seals in both Namibia and Canada.

South African protesters plan to converge on the Japanese Embassy in Pretoria on the 20th December to protest against Japan's cruel, unnecessary and unscientific whale hunt. Protesters will be calling on Japan to stop the annual capture and slaughter of around 20,000 dolphins. They want the government of Japan to know that they absolutely object, in the strongest possible terms, to this continued slaughter.
