Beauty Without Cruelty

Beauty Without Cruelty is the only organisation in South Africa doing in depth investigations into the humane claims of cosmetic/household product manufacturers. BWC's humane criteria are freely available and are listed on our web site www.bwcsa.co.za

They are as follows:

  1. BWC imposes a January 1990 fixed cut-off date (with regard to the use of animal tested ingredients) on companies wishing to be included on the BWC approved product guide (we will consider a company's self-imposed date, provided it is not less than 5 years prior to application and the company commits itself to complying with the chosen date in the future) and neither the products, nor the ingredients contained therein, may have been tested on animals after that date.
  2. Products may not contain substances which have been obtained as a result of the suffering or death of an animal, specifically to obtain such substance.
  3. Written assurance must be obtained (by the applicant company) that the company, as well as its own subsidiaries, parent company and other subsidiary companies of the parent company, have not commissioned any form of live animal testing, on individual ingredients, or on any of their finished products since the cut-off date and furthermore, written assurances must be obtained from the ingredient supply companies, that specific ingredients, contained in the products, have not been so tested by them since the cut-off date.
  4. Parent companies and their subsidiaries must comply with these criteria, as any company, whether acceptable on its own or not, will be contributing profits to the unacceptable parent company and its subsidiaries (e.g. Body Shop/L'Oreal).
  5. BWC does not accept the use of ingredients that have been required by law to be tested on animals, after the cut-off date, or the use of animal test data that has been obtained after that date.
While we are unable to share certain information that is considered confidential, we would really appreciate it if you and others would write to companies, asking them the following questions, which we would ask you to refer to us for further action:
  1. Does your company employ a fixed cut-off date with regard to the use of animal tested ingredients?
  2. Does your company use ingredients that have been required by law to be tested on animals, or that have been obtained from animal test data, after a fixed cut-off date?
  3. Is your company a subsidiary of a parent company.
  4. Does your parent company and all its subsidiaries comply with humane criteria such as these.
  5. Do your products contain ingredients, that have been obtained through the suffering or death of an animal, specifically to obtain such ingredient?
